My golf mk2 petrol won't start?

The engine is turning over but not catching, we have checked the spark plugs and they are fine and there is defintely fuel in the tank. the car has always started first time but when being driven could sometimes start spluttering and chugging, but always restarted again fine? Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated
