What am I meant to do now? What is right and what is wrong in all this?

Well, we've been together for an year now. But the last 5 months we lived apart, since he now works and lives 600 km away from me, from where i study. I used to live in his same town before. Things are not going that well cos of this distance. he says he cannot be without me but also he cannot stand the distance. Neither I can. He says "let's take it slow". Sometimes we end up quarreling for nothing and that's because of the distance. He says that distance is the biggest problem. So I've made up my mind. I told him: "I should leave everything and come and stay with you in your town". Guess what his answer was? "You shouldn't, you have to study and after all we'd only end up quarreling every single day. It's not worth the pain" Oh my gosh!!! What does that mean? Why doesn't he want me to move? He knows I don't live well here and that my only wish is to be with him and wake up in the same bed where it does! :(
